Five years after the opening of the IKEA Planning Studio in Dornbirn’s Messepark, IKEA is taking the next step in Vorarlberg:

The company has acquired the former KIKA/Leiner building in Dornbirn and plans to open a new IKEA store there in the fall of 2027. This location will mark the ninth IKEA store in Austria and represent another important milestone in the company’s regional expansion. The total investment amounts to 65 million euros.

For IKEA Austria, Vorarlberg is one of the regions with particularly high growth potential. The existing planning studio in Messepark confirms the interest many people in the region have in IKEA’s products and services. At the same time, due to limited available space, it has been difficult in recent years to develop a suitable location for a larger store. The opportunity to continue using the existing building in Dornbirn now opens up a sustainable and economically sound solution. “Many people in Vorarlberg are already familiar with and use our planning studio at the Messepark. With the new location in Dornbirn, we now want to bring the complete IKEA shopping experience to the region—with inspiration, planning services, dining, and many products that can be taken home right away,” says Alexandra Dürr, Area Manager and Head of Retail Operations at IKEA Austria. “At the same time, it is particularly important to us to reuse the existing building and thus conserve resources.”

The new location will be converted into a so-called IKEA Small Store. The concept brings the complete IKEA shopping experience together in a compact space, combining inspiration, planning, shopping, and dining under one roof. The store will cover approximately 16,000 square meters and will be organized across a total of five levels.

The location is right next to Messepark, one of Vorarlberg’s most important shopping centers. The site is very well connected to public transportation, bus routes, and bike paths.

Next Steps

Applications for building and business permits are scheduled for April or May 2026. Preliminary work is set to begin in the summer of 2026. Construction is scheduled to start in September or October 2026, pending local approvals. “By reusing the existing building, we can develop the new location in a resource-efficient manner while also renovating it efficiently,” says Wolfgang Kietreiber-Makari, Country Expansion Manager at IKEA Austria. “Once the permitting process is complete, we want to begin the renovation work and gradually transform the store into the new IKEA furniture store in Dornbirn.” Until the opening, the existing IKEA planning studio in Messepark and the current pickup services will remain in operation.
